     Marcus Harris Ward was born on 24 November 1836 in Athol, Worcester County, Massachusetts.1,2,3,4,5,6 He was the son of Deacon Thomas Harris Ward and Esther Kellogg Mayo.1,2,3,4,5,6 He enlisted in the 25th Regiment Massachusetts Volunteers, Company I, as a private on 3 October 1861. The regiment was sent to North Carolina as part of the Burnside expedition. He was captured near Winfield, North Carolina on 16 April 1863 . On 17 July 1863, he was paroled and returned to his regiment. When his enlistment was up, he reenlisted and took a furlough back to Orange in January 1864.7 On 3 June 1864, he was wounded in the breast during assult at the Battle of Cold Harbor.7,5,8 Marcus Harris Ward died on Tuesday, 28 June 1864 in Washington, DC, at age 27 years, 7 months and 4 days. As with many injured in those days, his developed into pneumonia.9,5,4,3,2,7 He was buried in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Arlington County, Virginia, His grave is in section 13, grave # 5721. There is also a memorial stone in Jones Cemetery, Orange, Massachusetts.9,5,2
