     Dorothy Goddard was born on 29 January 1758 in Petersham, Worcester County, Massachusetts. Mayo (1965) gives her birth date as 15 January 1758.4,5,1,2 She was the daughter of Nathan Goddard and Dorothy Stevens.1,2,3,4 Dorothy Goddard was nick named "Dolly."1 She being but 16 years when married, her father, Nathan, built her a large home, which became the "Mayo Tavern." After her husband's death, she maintained the tavern. The following was written in the History of North Orange: "Aunt Dolly was noted for her parties and good cooking. The story is told that at one time a party of soldiers passed through the place and stopped at the house for food. Aunt Dolly had a sheep killed, dressed and cooked for them in short order - they then went on their way.6" In 1773 in Orange, Franklin County, Massachusetts, Dorothy married Benjamin Mayo, son of Major Joseph Mayo and Esther Kenrick.1,3 Dorothy Goddard and Benjamin Mayo filed marriage intentions on 1 November 1773 in Warwick, Franklin County, Massachusetts.1 Dorothy Goddard died on Saturday, 7 June 1845 in Orange, Franklin County, Massachusetts, at age 87 years, 4 months and 9 days.1,7 Dorothy's gravestone inscription in North Orange Cemetery, Orange, Franklin County, Massachusetts, reads:
